The Working Week

8 June, 2008 (18:25) | Personal | By: Guise Dugal

I haven’t mentioned much about job hunting recently, mainly because a lot of time has been spent on applications and waiting, however the period of waiting is over. Now is the time.

Well, technically, tomorrow.

Tomorrow morning I start my induction training day at the Hospital to become a Prep Officer in the Medical Records section.

This’ll be yet another in my history of public sector jobs having been through Housing Benefit processing for local council outsourced partner, Fraud Investigation admin for Department for Work and Pensions, and Carer Training admin for Local Council. In fact, the only private sector job I’ve held since my true working life ended was working graveyard shift at Spar – a convenience store – for under a month between businesses.

There is some slight tugging of the heart about working at the hospital, as the area I will be in faces the entrance to the Accident and Emergency area (the lower budget ER equivalent). This was where, for years until he took retirement, my father worked.

The travel isn’t too bad, only a few minutes on a bus, and the hours are pretty standard. I’m not used to the concept of an hours lunch break, I always used flexible working hours to halve it and have a shorter day, and I’m not sure how I’d fill it. I can’t sit around doing nothing and I’m not sure just what else I’ll do besides chew each bit of sandwich a million times to fill the time.

Not to sound spoilt or childish, but I do see a downside to the work that I regret – which is only caused by the having to travel – and that is the change to an online routine. Recently, I’ve been very lucky to catch up with Dan and Dio for chats (as well as seeing FM and listening to DJ D’s show), and have been able to be around to enjoy their company. That’s not to say it’ll stop, because the time I am still around makes very little difference overall, but the mental and emotional effect is still there.

I’m looking forward to working. I’m looking forward to figuring out whether my humour is safe there. I’m looking forward to my bank account seeing increasing digits. I’m looking forward to enjoying late nights at weekends to chat with people.

Ugh, Graveyard shifts are terrible. I worked one at a Gas Station for a few months.
Congratulations on the job, and as for the lunch break, get a DS they’re a lifesaver for killing time.
I’ve yet to get you on chat, Joshc31G if you use AIM.

I agree with Josh, get a DS. That way you can get Mario Kart or Pokemon and we can help you kill time on your lunch break! :D I know when I do find a job I’m gonna have a hard time getting back into the swing of things as well but sacrifices must be made right?

I’m hoping that they might let me shift hours at some point in the future, most other departments operate on flexible working hours and I miss that. I’d love to know if the place is in a WiFi zone though. I sat deleting years old text messages and stuff on my phone today, I’m such a hoarder.

Well, congrats! Yeah, changing your routine kind of sucks, but the extra digits in the bank account can make up for it. My schedule isn’t exactly ideal at my job (I work nights Thurs-Sun), but I love my job, and the money’s much nicer since I recently got promoted, so it’s worth the sacrifice. I would imagine a DS would make the time go by much faster. I don’t have one myself but I’m sure it’s only a matter of time. Right now, I’m just looking forward to getting a PS3 and an iPod so I can listen to Podcasts and things at work. That would make life at work sooo much easier. I gotta set up an AIM account too so I can keep up with all you guys. Sorry I’ve been kind of absent around the blogging scene lately, but I’m doing some catching up tonight. Work’s just been crazy lately. Oh, and thanks for listening to my show, Guise (and everyone else)! It makes my time there that much better.
