Voices Of Angels Singing To The Tune Of Devils
NaBloPoMo: Day Ten (Delayed to 18/07/09)
I don’t know why I picked that title, but it seemed somewhat fitting and reasonably poetic. I’m going to share with you all a simple joy today, little more than filler, but something that always moves me in different directions.
As many of you know, I’m a guy with very eclectic tastes and rather dubious interests at times, one of the things I enjoy from time to time is to see things done differently than expected, to see what things would be like from a different view.
I also like rock music, pop music, classical music. I’ve greatly enjoyed hearing String Quartet versions of some of the greatest bands and some modern masterpieces, playing out in tasteful styles befitting a grand concert hall.
I like girls too.
Scala & Kolacny Brothers is a Belgian girls’ choir formed in 1996, conducted by Stijn Kolacny and accompanied by Steven Kolacny on the piano, who are most well known for their cover versions of popular songs, including a lot of songs you wouldn’t normally equate to an all-girls choir. Some of the choices are specifically picked to play on this with tongue-in-cheek indifference.
The first time I heard Scala, and in fact heard of Scala, was by randomly finding a link to this song:
There is something wonderfully decadent, and yet at the same time sweet and pure, about hearing that song performed by a choral group. I’ve currently got all but one of the UK released albums, including the albums holding original works, but I will always adore hearing those songs I know and love being sung so differently.
I think the phrase ‘haunting’ could apply to this one, and in fact, if I’m ever recorded having a nervous breakdown in front of a mirror, I want it slowed down – including where I shatter the glass with my fists – and have this played over it as it’s uploaded to YouTube:
From haunting to slightly creepy, and I dare you to listen to this after dark with lights out.
And, a brilliant version of Kaiser Chiefs:
So, some dedications, firstly for Sarah who probably will not actually see this, but who exposed me to Pierce Brosnan singing – and for whom “Does Your Mother Know” is an anthem:
For Deej:
And, for Kristiane over at The Pilver:
I think I want that version of Creep played at my funeral. I’m adding that to my directives.
